Battery storage · works with your existing solar

Add a battery to your solar. Stop exporting power for pennies.

Keep the energy you make, instead of selling it cheap.

Your panels sell spare power back to the grid for a fraction of what you pay to buy it back at night. A battery keeps that energy for you. We retrofit a battery to almost any existing solar system, on a 0% VAT install, usually in a day. We retrofit across Yorkshire and the East Midlands from our Leeds base.

01 Why a battery, why now

Your solar is being exported for pennies. A battery stops that. Store the daytime surplus, use it in the evening, and charge cheaply overnight on a smart tariff.

Most homes use about a quarter of what their solar generates during the day and export the rest. You’re paid roughly 3–15p for each unit you export, then buy units back in the evening at 25–30p. A battery stores your daytime surplus and gives it back when you’d otherwise be buying, so far less of your solar is wasted and far less of your evening is bought from the grid. On a smart overnight tariff, the same battery also charges up cheaply when rates are lowest.

This works whether you already have panels or are adding them: see home solar PV, or commercial solar over 50 kWp if it is your business roof. The design thinking behind every install is set out on the about page, and the full line-up starts from the Alectrona home page.

02 Works with your existing solar

You almost certainly don’t need to replace anything you already have.

Two ways to add storage, plus a route with no solar at all. We recommend the right one after looking at your system.

When it makes sense

DC-coupled / hybrid

If your inverter is old, faulty or you’re expanding the system, we can fit a hybrid inverter and battery together.

  • A little more efficient and tidier
  • One inverter does solar and battery
  • Worth it only when the inverter is due for replacement anyway
No solar yet

Standalone battery

No solar at all? A battery still works on its own.

  • Charge it overnight on a cheap rate
  • Run the house from it during the expensive parts of the day
03 What you could save

Honest numbers, modelled from your real usage, never a brochure average. Most homes land in the 7–10 year payback range. We’ll tell you straight if a battery doesn’t pay for your situation.

A well-sized battery typically lifts the share of your own solar you actually use from around a quarter to most of it, and shifts your evening off the grid. Households on a smart overnight tariff stack a second saving by charging cheaply. We’ll model your real numbers from your usage and tariff before you commit, so the figure you see is modelled from your own generation and use.

We size the battery to cover your evening and overnight use without paying for capacity you won’t cycle. Payback for most homes lands in the 7–10 year range, and sooner for EV owners on an overnight tariff. Ask us and we’ll model yours, with the actual saving in pounds, before you decide anything.

08 FAQ

Battery storage: common questions

There is no price list, because the right battery is sized to your usage rather than picked off a shelf. We model your evening and overnight consumption, size the capacity you will actually cycle, and give you a fixed, itemised quote at 0% VAT (until 31 March 2027). We model your real savings first and tell you honestly if it does not add up for you.
Most retrofits are a single day on site. An AC-coupled battery connects to your consumer unit and your existing solar stays untouched, so there is no scaffolding and no roof work. We confirm the date when the design is agreed, and the system is commissioned and handed over before we leave.
Yes. An AC-coupled battery works alongside almost any existing solar inverter, whatever the brand or age, without touching your panels or your Feed-in-Tariff. It connects on the AC side of your installation, so nothing about the existing solar needs to change, and the original system carries on exactly as before. That is why retrofit is our default recommendation for homes that already generate.
Almost certainly. AC-coupled storage is inverter-agnostic, so it pairs with any brand and any age of solar inverter without compatibility checks. Where your existing inverter is old or faulty we may suggest a hybrid replacement instead, because replacing two boxes with one can be the better engineering, and we will explain the reasoning in the quote.
Usually no. We only recommend it when your inverter is failing or you’re expanding the system.
Enough to cover your evening and overnight use without paying for capacity you will not cycle. We size the battery from your actual usage pattern, not a generic household number, because an oversized battery wastes capital and an undersized one leaves savings on the table. The sizing logic is set out in your quote so you can see the working.
Only with the right battery and setup, and usually for selected circuits rather than the whole house. Backup needs a gateway that can island your home from the grid, which not every battery supports, and it adds cost. Tell us if backup matters to you and we will specify for it from the start rather than retrofitting it later.
Yes. Home battery storage carries 0% VAT in its own right until 31 March 2027, after which the rate is due to rise to 5%. The relief applies to retrofit batteries added to existing solar and to standalone batteries fitted without panels, and it does not depend on MCS.
No. MCS isn’t required for battery storage or for the 0% VAT. It only matters for new solar that needs the Smart Export Guarantee.
We make the G99 application to your network operator for you. It’s a short approval and we handle it end to end.
It depends on your system, budget and whether you want backup. We’ll recommend from quality brands (Tesla, Sigenergy, Fox ESS, SolaX, AlphaESS, Puredrive).
Yes. Charge it overnight on a cheap rate and run the house from it during expensive hours.
No. An AC-coupled retrofit leaves your existing solar and FiT metering as they are.
Batteries typically carry a 10 to 15 year manufacturer warranty depending on the brand and how the warranty measures use, some by years and some by energy throughput. Our workmanship is covered separately. We confirm the exact terms for the battery we specify in writing in your quote, so the cover you rely on matches the unit installed.
The 0% VAT window runs to March 2027, and every month you wait is more solar exported for pennies. If the numbers work, sooner is better. We’ll tell you if they don’t.
